AMG:
Diane Schuur, one of the greatest entertainers in the world, makes her Concord Jazz debut with Friends for Schuur and it is remarkable. Her multifaceted vocal artistry is featured in great company on 11 sensational songs including two "live" concerts that feature Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. There is even a digitally reintroduced version of "Easy Living," featuring the great Stan Getz. Diane Schuur is regal and she's soulful, passionate, and playful and her avid listeners know immediately that her voice has all the right qualities: technique, range, and adaptability to pop, jazz, gospel, and blues. "I'd Fly" is a definite smooth jazz hit. She sings its sexy, but beautifully contoured melody, romantic lyrics with such yearning and passion that this late-night romantic ballad should land solidly on the charts. Her duet with Stevie Wonder on "Finally" is prime. Her "live" duet with Ray Charles on "It Had to Be You" is packed full of soul, and all the while, you know you're in the middle of something amazing. The great songwriters Alan Bergman and Dave Grusin place their inimitable stamp on the essential "It Might Be You" (Theme From "Tootsie") and with Schuur's heartfelt vocals, it clearly remains one of the best songs of the 20th century. Friends for Schuur brings you the new first lady of jazz at the height of her award-winning career. With it, Diane Schuur becomes the consummate entertainer whose dreams are forever intertwined with the greatest names in jazz and contemporary music.

Bebo & Cigala - Lagrimas Negras
Label:RCA Victor
Styles: Latin music,Flamenco,Cuban jazz
Original Release Date: June 22, 2004
Quality/Bitrate: FLAC,CUE
Size: 220 MB
This album pairs one of the greatest latin music singers of today, cantaor Diego El Cigala, with one of Cuba's finest Afro-Cuban pianists, Bebo Valdes. With Valdes (father of the great Chucho Valdes) born in 1918, there's a 40-year age difference between the pianist and the singer, but they do a fine job crossing generations and oceans to discover the commonalities between Caribbean and the Iberian music, coming up with a romantic marriage of the two cultures using rumbas, guajira, sons and boleros. All the songs are classics out of the Latin music tradition, using just a handful of players in support. Valdes's fingers are delicate and prone to dramatic flourishes; Cigala's voice is pure flamenco in its hoarse intonation, cadence and emotional outpourings. The two masters make the union work by focusing on the drama of the love songs--"Veinte Anos," "Inolvidable" and the title track are just three amazing examples--as fuel for some of the most exquisitely passionate music to come out in ages.

Portico Quartet are currently le dernier cri in London—awards nominations, MTV sync deals and top-end TV and radio sessions are being thrown their way like confetti. Knee Deep In The North Sea is the quartet's debut album and it proves to be great stuff, deserving of much of the media cavalcade.
Portico's USP is the inclusion of two hangs in the line-up. Two whats? Invented in the late 1990s by a pair of Swiss-based world music enthusiasts, the hang is a tuned percussion instrument which is a cross between gongs, gamelan and various other drums and bells. It can play up to nine notes tuned around a central deep tone. It looks like an elaborate Chinese cooking implement and sounds like a refined Trinidadian steel drum.
The musicians are young—aged between 20 and 22—and not long out of college, and Portico was originally conceived as a busking group. Their regular pitch was inside London's National Theatre and South Bank Arts Centre complex, a good place to win influential friends if you've got something unusual to offer.
The music, all of it original, is a cross between jazz and modern classical. It's mellifluous, exuberant and jaunty, full of catchy tunes and strong hooks. It's mostly through-written, with relatively little space given to solos (most of these by saxophonist Jack Wyllie), but it swings and has an informal, otherwise indefinable, jazz attitude.
The overall effect is light and feel-good, but it isn't bland. Wyllie from time-to-time essays convincingly, if briefly, into Albert Ayler-esque harmonics and multiphonics; there's a wide dynamic range (most of the tunes are mini-suites, each containing vividly contrasting sections); and the rhythms are sharp. And the hang is tuneful and fun.

Those who know Viktor Krauss primarily by his supporting roles with Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, Jerry Douglas, and scores of others, might be surprised by the eclectic range of the original music on his new recording II. On the other hand, listeners familiar with Krauss' remarkable 2004 solo debut, Far From Enough (Nonesuch), and attuned to the finer details of his recording and touring credits - with everyone from Carly Simon, Elvis Costello, John Fogerty, Emmylou Harris, and Graham Nash to Chet Atkins, the Chieftains, and Jewel - will find II quite consonant with that eclectic track record.
Although II is clearly kin to Far from Enough , it is less a sequel than a bolder and more colorful expression of Krauss' ebullient and multifaceted musical personality. From the low rumble acceleration into the gleaming guitar-driven glide of the opener "Hop", through six more richly textured instrumentals and three stunning vocal turns by Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, and Ben Taylor, II reflects Krauss' restless curiosity and masterful ability to integrate his interests in film scores, jazz, rock, R&B, and pop.
"I wrote 'Hop' in 1996," recalls Krauss, born in Champaign, Illinois, in 1969, and now a Nashville resident. "I was influenced by the feeling of Tennessee as it turns grey in winter. Now I get visions of a jet moving down a runway, and when the full drum kit comes in, we've lifted off, and now we're coasting. It's one of the favorites I've ever recorded." - Viktor © / Reviews

Bassist/composer Viktor Krauss was born in Champaign, IL in 1969. He grew up listening to movie soundtracks and predominantly instrumental music. At the age of five, Krauss was encouraged by his parents to pursue an instrument; he chose piano, then added trumpet in the fourth grade. As a boy, Krauss sang in university productions, including the role of Amahl in Menotti’s opera Amahl and the Night Visitors. After attending a middle school concert, Krauss became inspired by the double bass due to its ominous sonic and visual qualities. Krauss had found his truest musical friend; quickly realizing that the bass was generally needed in any form of music, he became interested in idioms outside of the school orchestras. He started playing with local jazz groups as well as occasionally accompanying his sister, Alison, at fiddle competitions.
A friend approached Krauss during high school with plans for forming a rock band. His work with the group sparked an enduring enthusiasm for rock and R&B. Krauss became enthralled with groups like the Police, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and, most significantly, Led Zeppelin, and began prolifically writing pop and rock-based songs.
After high school, Krauss began studying bass at the University of Illinois. Finding creative avenues to be more rewarding, he completed his degree in music composition with an emphasis on electronic and tape music and minored in voice. His compositions included a work for bowed Fender bass, delay/echo, and voice; and a twelve-tone “serial” work for twelve-string electric guitar. While in college, Krauss along with Sean Smith (co-writer on two selections on Far From Enough) formed the Zappa-esque rock band Difficult Listening, which played university venues as well as listening rooms from 1989–1992. From 1992–1993, Krauss toured and recorded with Peter Rowan and the Free Mexican Air Force at Americana venues such as Mountain Stage and Prairie Home Companion.
Krauss began recording and touring with Lyle Lovett in 1994 and has worked with him for nearly a decade. The Lovett recordings on which Krauss plays include Step Inside This House, Songs From the Movies, Live in Texas, and selections from Anthology, Volume I. Lovett’s 2003 release My Baby Don't Tolerate, again features Krauss on bass and also as co-writer on "You Were Always There." Krauss and Lovett, along with Nashville pianist and producer Matt Rollings, collaborated on the score for the 2000 Robert Altman film, Dr. T. and the Women.
In 1995, Krauss joined Nonesuch recording artist Bill Frisell to record Nashville, which also featured Robin Holcomb, Jerry Douglas, Ron Block, and Adam Steffy. Krauss also joined Frisell on the recordings Gone, Just Like a Train (a trio album with Jim Keltner), Good Dog, Happy Man (with Keltner, Wayne Horvitz, Greg Liesz, and Ry Cooder), and The Sweetest Punch (songs written by Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach, arranged by Frisell).
Krauss recorded several selections for Alison Krauss's, 1999 solo album, Forget About It, and also played on her 1994 record with the Cox family, I Know Who Holds Tomorrow. For the 1996 movie Twister, Krauss co-wrote and co-produced "Moments Like This" with Michael McDonald for Union Station. Jerry Douglas's Restless on the Farm included Krauss on bass, as did his record, Lookout for Hope. In 2000, Krauss recorded on Graham Nash's Songs for Survivors, a Russ Kunkel and Nathaniel Kunkel production. In August of 2003, Krauss recorded with John Fogerty for an upcoming release.
Additional recordings featuring Krauss include those of Eric Benet, Michael McDonald, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nicole C. Mullen, Martin Taylor, Natalie McMaster, Michael Johnson, David Mead, Acoustic Alchemy, Maura O'Connell, and Gabriela. Krauss's live performances include shows with Jewel, Larry Carlton, Shelby Lynne, and the Chieftains. Krauss has produced two albums for rock singer-songwriter Jason White: 2000's Shades of Gray and 2003's Tonight's Top Story.
The Nonesuch release Far From Enough is Krauss's first solo recording; he calls it a "soundtrack without the movie." The record covers a vast spectrum of music that Krauss has enjoyed over the years. Krauss is an avid collector of pedals, vintage electronic musical equipment, and Tonka Volkswagens.
Solo albums by sidemen are notoriously hodgepodge affairs. Not so with Viktor Krauss's debut. Krauss has helped Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, Elvis Costello, the Cox Family, and dozens more redefine bluegrass, jazz, rock, and Americana styles. Now the bassist-composer brother of Grammy-laden singer Alison Krauss has his own all-star band and his own shimmering gem of a CD. The largely instrumental album's modern roots-music hybrids and wide-open sound yield some of the dreamiest passages since Daniel Lanois's 1989 classic "Acadie." As he has for countless others, Krauss contributes the intuitive craft and resonant beauty of his upright bass work. And as bandleader, he balances a melodic ease with the roughened grind of funky chops, pushing his crack crew -- guitarist Frisell, drummer Steve Jordan, dobro master Jerry Douglas on steel guitars, and violist Alison breathing wordless vocals -- in textured interplay. Though Krauss includes a chilling version of Robert Plant's "Big Log" (sung by Alison), cites AC/DC for inspiring "Tended," and pushes the fusionoid funk envelope on "Here to Be Me," his CD is more darkly evocative than raucous. But it would be a mistake to relegate this movieless soundtrack to background music - its subtlety is gorgeous.

2003" target="_blank">This way to listen to "Wastrel Reclaiming"
